Maya Angelou Becomes First Black Woman on a US Quarter
Every woman should be celebrating Maya Angelou’s legacy that is now printed on every 25-cent coin as a reminder of her greatness. The writer and poet has become the first Black woman to have her likeness depicted on the quarter which is the first in a series of coins commemorating pioneering American women that began shipping this week.
Janet Yellen, who is the US first female treasury secretary shared the honor in a statement that read:
“Each time we redesign our currency, we have the chance to say something about our country –
what we value, and how we’ve progressed as a society.”
The treasury also released a first look at the coin.
We love it everything about this, period.
