International Womens Day: Barbie Honors Role Models

Just in time for a celebration of women, doing extraordinary things across the globe, the iconic Barbie Brand is shining a light on a group of very deserving trailblazers. The company released one-of-a-kind dolls in the likeness of 12 global female role models. The toy retail giant shared the news via social media, adding that the release marks its efforts to continue a commitment to closing the Dream Gap by inspiring girls everywhere to dream big.

Amongst those honored with their own role model doll, was Shonda Rhimes. The Showrunner and Producer is also working together with the brand as part of the Barbie Dream Gap Project. The multi-year initiative, created in 2018 strives to raise awareness about the factors that keep young girls from reaching their full potential.

“We obviously can be anything. We obviously can look any way. We can all be strong and smart and powerful and run our worlds in any way we want to”

Rhimes says she felt that Partnering with Barbie would open an opportunity to present a diverse image of what a woman could be.

“The idea that there are dolls out there that can look like you and feel like you and give you the ability to imagine yourself in a different world, in a different way, in a way that maybe you only secretly dreamed, or thought was impossible in real life, I think that is incredibly important…As a storyteller, I think everything begins with your imagination.
— Shonda Rhimes

All 12 of these women represent strength, perseverance, resilience, beauty, self-love and GIRL Power that will continue to positively influence and inspire the next generation of women leaders in tech, wellness, entertainment, STEM and education. We Salute!
