British Vogue Highlights Black Beauty & African Fashion

The melanin is front and center and the MAGIC is real. The London based fashion publication is shining a light on women of color in its February issue, just in time for Black History Month. The new release features 9 African models, with a spread that focuses on the rise of African fashion and is giving Black. Girl. Joy.

“I know there’s so many little black girls who will look at this cover and feel something. I hope it makes you feel seen, heard and happy as it did me,” ~Nyagua Ruea.

Ruea, along with cover feature Adut Akech are among the black beauties featured in the upcoming issue next to Anok Yai, Majesty Amare, Amar Akway, Janet Jumbo, Maty Fall, Abény Nhial and Akon Changkou. These dark-skinned Queens are redefining what it means to be a model, while redirecting the perception of their heritage. Black is Rich. Period.

Edward Enninful, British Vogue’s Editor in Chief expressed appreciation for the moment stating- “No longer just one or two dark-skinned girls mingled backstage, but a host of top models took a meaningful, substantial and equal place among the most successful women working in fashion today. It means so much to me to see it,”

The rise of the African model is “long overdue”, says Edward Enninful.
