The Color Purple 2023

From the 1985 classic theater release that captivated a culture earning 11 Oscar nods, to the Broadway hit revamped in 2005 to a highly anticipated musical film set to be released in 2023, The Color Purple has earned a permanent spot in our history and hearts for generations to come.

The blockbuster drama based on the best-selling novel by renowned author Alice Walker is now taking shape in modern day film, and we couldn’t be more excited to watch it all unfold. The Color Purple was a foundation layer for much of its talent, who we now know as some of the greats of our time. Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Avery and Whoopi Goldberg are just a shortlist of the film’s stars who went on to become legendary.

Now, as we await the 2023 arrival of the revamped musical film, the anticipation grows heavier as list of character reimage picks are revealed. The purple torch is being passed along to some of our greatest present-day actors, actresses and artists crossing over into Hollywood. And we couldn’t help but notice all of the black girl magic on deck for the new age Color Purple. Check out the cast list for the remake!

Continuing their reign from The Color Purple on Broadway, both Fantasia Barrino & Danielle Brooks will assume the characters of Celie and Sophia.

Taraji P. Henson has been tapped to star as Shug Avery.

H.E.R will take on the role of Squeak.

And Halle Bailey is tasked with the position of her sister’s keeper as Nettie.

Alongside the ladies, Colman Domingo is set to take on the role of Mister and we’ll see Corey Hawkins as Harpo. An ultra-talented line up packed with star power indeed. The musical remake of The Color Purple is set to be released on Dec. 23, 2023. We were ready yesterday. Congrats to the new cast!
